My approach to Holistic Depression Treatment

People who experience depression share that they feel stuck, hopeless, and misunderstood. And it often feels challenging to accomplish everyday tasks.  Depression can come in waves or seasons, or it can linger beneath the surface for a long time. Like every emotion, people experience it in their own unique way. 

 

As a Holistic Mental Health Practitioner, I approach depression treatment with a lens of unconditional positive regard and compassion. I first help my clients by seeking to deeply understand the complexity and reverence of their experience, as well as the past experiences that have shaped them.  With a strong foundation of understanding and care, I assist my clients with creating a healing plan that feels slightly challenging, but manageable. This often looks like a road map where gradual steps and small victories are acknowledged and celebrated. 

 

We also explore the other aspects of the individual's life that may be affected by deep feelings of sadness, such as their relationships, physical health, and desire to engage in activities that previously brought them joy. I help my clients view themselves as resilient beings who are capable of overcoming and healing even the most debilitating feelings.  With emphasis on uncovering the root cause and healing from the source, we also identify triggers and create a toolkit of resources to help overcome them in our everyday life experiences. 

 

Through a gentle and holistic framework, my clients learn how to navigate their own experience of depression, as well as gain confidence in their ability to apply a whole toolkit full of resources to balance their emotions, thoughts, energy, and physical body in a multitude of environments and internal situations. In addition to coping skills, my clients learn the self-care strategies that provide their systems with a deep feeling of safety and security from the inside out.

What are the signs of depression?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health,  the following is a list of possible signs of depression, or a depressed mood. People who experience depression do not feel all of these symptoms, some feel a few, and others feel many. 

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood

  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

  • Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

  • Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling slowed down

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions

  • Difficulty sleeping, waking early in the morning, or oversleeping

  • Changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes

  • Physical aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not have a clear physical cause and do not go away with treatment

  • Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts

Can you prevent depression?

Here are some ways to prevent seasons of depression, or manage your symptoms so they do not get worse:

  • Implement regular self-care strategies 

  • Implement coping skills for stress, such as meditation and yoga 

  • Move your body daily and have a balanced diet 

  • Get an adequate amount of sleep

  • Stay connected to family and friends 

  • Set boundaries 

  • Join a support group with a safe community 

  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs 

  • Pay attention to your symptoms and create space to journal your thoughts and reflect on your feelings

What causes depression?

Depression is caused by a complex interaction between an individual's social, psychological, and biological factors, as well as their life experiences. Some of the major causes of depression include:

  • A genetic predisposition

  • Stress

  • Trauma / abuse

  • A death or loss

  • Major events

  • Chronic or serious illness 

  • Medication reactions 

  • Substance misuse

Are there alternative treatments for depression

Alternative therapy refers to treatment methods that have not yet been extensively researched or scientifically documented. The alternative method of treatment I specialize in is called Integrated Therapeutic Alignment (ITA), which is a comprehensive modality of energy medicine. ITA holds the belief that all offsets begin energetically first, and then manifests in the mind and body, so ITA tracks the energetic links to find and heal the root cause of any problem.
