My approach to Holistic Anxiety Treatment Long Island

Anxiety is a natural and normal biological reaction that every person experiences to varying degrees. Anxiety helps to prepare us for a stressful event, like an exam or public speaking. And it supports the body and mind to be focused, alert, and energized. In essence, it is designed to keep the human systems safe.

Anxiety can be adaptive and maladaptive. Adaptive anxiety is usually short term, related to a stressor, and is a normal safety response. Maladaptive anxiety tends to interfere with day-to-day functioning by causing intense worry and stress that is beyond what is appropriate for the given situation. For example, feeling sick to your stomach before going to a social event, having panic attacks when there is not an immediate threat, feeling consumed by worry thoughts that spiral into worst case scenarios.

My  approach to anxiety counseling is to first, deeply acknowledge the parts of the individual that are feeling scared, and doing everything they can to keep themselves safe. And second, empower my clients to self-heal. How? With unconditional positive regard and empathy for the emotions taking place, I guide the individual through a journey of discovering the root cause of their anxiety, processing it on a mental and energetic level, while also implementing the tools to cope with stressors and triggers in a balanced way.

Through a gentle and holistic framework, my clients learn how to navigate their own unique anxiety, as well as gain confidence in their ability to apply a whole toolkit full of resources to balance their emotions, thoughts, energy, and physical body in a multitude of environments and internal situations. In addition to coping skills, my clients learn the self-care strategies that provide their systems with a deep feeling of safety and security from the inside out.

With the support of an anxiety counselor, people who experience anxiety to varying degrees can discover a life liberated from internal chaos, as they step into self-compassion, empowerment, resilience, and trust.

Holistic Anxiety Counseling FAQs

Will anxiety ever go away?

Yes! Anxiety can go away with the proper treatment and therapies. Counseling can help you get to the root cause of your specific triggers and stored traumas (both in your body and mind). It also helps to give you the tools that can be used on a daily basis to heal and resolve the symptoms and root cause.

Why does anxiety flare up?

Anxiety can arise for many different reasons. In essence, anxiety is a maladaptive coping mechanism we have developed to keep us safe. Anxiety can arise due to a build up of stress / life stressors. Certain environmental factors and personality types can also contribute to anxiety.  Stored trauma can also play a big role. Every person is unique, and so treatment should be individualized.

Is anxiety normal?

Anxiety is a normal emotion that everyone feels to varying degrees from time to time. And as humans, we are meant to experience the entire spectrum of emotions. However, when anxiety is maladaptive and interferes with an individual's well being, then it is time to think of some treatment methods to resolve the intense discomfort that often arises with anxiety.

What does anxiety feel like?

Common descriptions of anxiety include the following:

  • Tension in the body

  • Over worrying and overthinking / racing thoughts

  • Being on edge and irritable

  • Restless mind and difficulty sleeping or concentrating

  • Feeling nervous and even shaky

  • Preparing for the worst

  • Self-isolating

  • Procrastination / self-sabotaging

  • Doubting the self

  • Changes in appetite

  • And many more

How do I relax quickly?

My number 1 tip for relaxing is to focus on your breath (now before you slam your laptop shut, give me another sentence or two). When we have short, shallow breaths, it activates our sympathetic nervous system (our fight or flight response; aka, anxiety). But when we breathe deeply, and allow the abdomen to expand during the inhalation and contract during the exhalation, it sends signals to the brain to activate the opposite: the parasympathetic nervous system, which automatically relaxes your body and mind.
